Los Angeles, CA (September 26, 2018) – Following its sold-out premiere at the Los Angeles Film Festival, THE ADVOCATES, an intensely human and humanizing documentary that provides a sweeping look at the historic and current causes of L.A.’s unprecedented homeless crisis will open at Laemmle theatres starting October 19. Director/Producer Rémi Kessler documented the work of three advocates as the strive to find supportive housing solutions for their clients in Los Angeles’ streets over the course of three years.

SYNOPSIS: Over half a million people are homeless in the United States–25% of whom are in California.

Amid public outcry over the ballooning homeless population in Los Angeles–nearly 54,000 people on any given night–three advocates with three different organizations show what the lost ideal of “care in the community” looks like amid a changing policy landscape.

Intensely human and humanizing, The Advocates provides a sweeping look at the historic and current causes of L. A’s unprecedented crises, largely due to defunded affordable housing. It goes behind the headlines with pragmatic stories of the transformative work that is possible when the right resources, funding, and compassion are applied.

The film features advocates Claudia Perez, Rudy Salinas, and Mel Tillekeratne, and the organizational work of LA on Cloud9, Housing Works, and Monday Night Mission with experts including: Celina Alvarez (Executive Director, Housing Works), Gary Blasi (UCLA, Professor of Law Emeritus), Jerry Jones (Inner City Law Center), Mary Kirchen (Founder, Housing Works), Steve Lopez (Columnist, LA Times), Alisa Orduna (Homeless Policy Director, Mayor Garcetti’s Office), Mark Ridley-Thomas (LA County Supervisor 2nd District), David Ryu (LA City Councilmember CD4), and Paul Tepper (Western Center on Law & Poverty).

The film is produced by KSA Productions, co-produced and edited by Bob McFalls, and is proud to partner with the United Way of Greater Los Angeles and its Everyone In campaign.

Kessler’s work includes numerous commercials, feature films, music videos, television series, corporate films and documentaries throughout the world, with artists including DJ David Guetta, and iconic fashion designer Ozwald Boateng. Over the last decade, Rémi has produced several documentaries, including THE WONDERFUL HISTORY OF THE HOLLYWOOD STUDIOS, and for the 100th anniversary of Orson Welles’ birth, SHADOWS AND LIGHTS that opened the classic section of Cannes Film Festival in 2015.

“Many Angelenos are very concerned with the homeless situation in Los Angeles which has reached a critical point,” says Director, Rémi Kessler. “During filming I saw everyone, from government to just regular folks like you and me getting together to try to find a solution. I hope THE ADVOCATES will help change our hearts and minds regarding what we can do as a community to help all those people sleeping in our streets.”

Richard Castro, Cinema Libre’s VP, Distribution & Acquisitions/COO says,“The film impressed us because of its unique focus on the women and men who dedicate their lives to helping our city’s homeless population. They are people whose work deserves our appreciation and respect, and we’re particularly grateful that Rémi and his team were able to engage the support of United Way of Great Los Angeles and the Everyone In campaign to help bring this film to as many people as possible.  Perhaps, if more of us are aware of the work of these advocates, then more of us will be encouraged to do our own part to help end homelessness,”

The documentary will be released in Laemmle theaters in Los Angeles by Cinema Libre Studio starting October 19.
