Los Angeles, CA (September15, 2016) — Cinema Libre Studio has acquired rights in the U.S. and selective foreign territores to investigative reporter Greg Palast’s documentary THE BEST DEMOCRACY MONEY CAN BUY: A TALE OF BILLIONAIRES & BALLOT BANDITS. The film reveals how nearly one million minority voters can lose their vote this November. To release the film as widely as possible before the November 8th election, the film will be released in a traditional theatrical platform starting September 23 in New York, followed by Los Angeles on September 30th and then Gathr theatrical-on-demand ® screenings plus a DVD/SVOD date of October 18, 2016.
Greg Palast has been called the “most important investigative reporter of our time – up there with Woodward and Bernstein” (The Guardian). He has broken front-page stories for BBC Television Newsnight, The Guardian, Nation Magazine, Rolling Stone and Harper’s Magazine. His books, “Billionaires & Ballot Bandits,” “Armed Madhouse”, “The Best Democracy Money Can Buy” and the highly acclaimed “Vultures’ Picnic” have been New York Times bestsellers and have been translated into two dozen languages. Palast is best known for exposing how Florida purged thousands of innocent Black people from the voter rolls in 2000 to steal the election for George W. Bush.
The film was produced by David Ambrose (co-founder of Art Not War) with music by Bulgarian composer Mario Grigorov (Precious, Flowers in the Attic0. For Palast’s film, legendary musician Graham Nash re-recorded his Crosby, Stills & Nash blockbuster hit “Chicago,” re-writing the words to reference Ohio, the most crucial swing state in the coming election. Cartoons are by Emmy award-winning artist Keith Tucker (Who Killed Roger Rabbit). Executive producer is Leni Badpenny von Eckardt-Manzoni in association with The Park Foundation, The Puffin Foundation and the Cloud Mountain Foundation, as well as over 1000 crowd-sourced donors. The deal was negotiated between Palast and Cinema Libre Studio’s CEO, Philippe Diaz.
When Donald Trump says, “This election is rigged”—he should know. His buddies are rigging it.
Rolling Stone investigative reporter Greg Palast busted Jeb Bush for stealing the 2000 election by purging Black people from Florida’s voter rolls. Now Palast is back to take a deep dive into the Republicans’ dark operation, Crosscheck, designed to steal a million votes by November.
Crosscheck is controlled by a Trump henchman, Kris Kobach, Kansas Secretary of State who claims his computer program has identified 7.2 million people in 29 states who may have voted twice in the same election–a felony crime. The catch? Most of these “suspects” are minorities—in other words, mainly Democratic voters. Yet the lists and the evidence remain “confidential.”
Palast and his investigative partner Leni Badpenny do what it takes to get their hands on the data, analyzing it to find the names of nearly one million Americans about to lose their vote by November.
They hunt down and confront Kobach with the evidence of his “lynching by laptop.” Then they are off to find the billionaires behind this voting scam. The search takes Palast from Kansas to the Arctic, the Congo, and to a swanky Hamptons dinner party held by Trump’s sugar-daddy, John Paulson, a.k.a. “JP The Foreclosure King.” Palast and Badpenny stake out top GOP donors, the billionaire known as “The Vulture” and the Koch brothers, whom Palast nails with a damning tape recording.
In this real life detective story brought to life in a film noir style with cartoon animation, secret documents, hidden cameras, and a little help from Law & Order: Special Victims Unit detectives, Ice-T and Richard Belzer, Shailene Woodley, Rosario Dawson, Willie Nelson and Ed Asner, Palast and his associates expose the darkest plans of the uber-rich to steal America’s democracy.
The film’s release will be buoyed by organizational support from 18 Million Rising, People for the American Way, Rainbow Push Coalition, Southern Christian Leadership Conference and Voto Latino. A non-fiction book by Palast, “The Best Democracy Money Can Buy: A Tale of Billionaires & Ballot Bandits,” will be released at the same time by Seven Stories Press and a comic book by the same name, co-written by Palast, and Tucker will be available in October.
