AN EXPLORATION OF THE HUMAN CONNECTION TO THE OCEAN,
THROUGH A SURF CENTRIC LENS
BlueGreen: Our Connection to the Ocean
STREETS ON DVD SEPTEMBER 28 – AVAILABLE NOW FOR PRE-ORDER
LOS ANGELES (September 2010) – There is a physiological connection to the ocean, whether it’s a conscious one or not. No matter the conditions, the human need to be near the ocean is palpable as illustrated in BLUEGREEN: OUR CONNECTION TO THE OCEAN from Cinema Libre Studio’s earthNOW! label, to be released nationwide on DVD on September 28, 2010.
BLUEGREEN is a labor of love for filmmaker Ben Keller, encompassing all of the subjects that he cares for most: the outdoors, the environment and surfing. But it is that connection to the ocean that he wanted to explore. He chose 13 subjects to find the answer — various influencers who spoke passionately and candidly about their love of the ocean and how it impacts their lives. Some of those influencers include: Keith Malloy, former pro surfer who walked away from being a professional at the prime of his career; Layne Beachley, the 7-time Women’s World Champion, Robert August, renowned surfboard shaper who received national attention from the surf epic “Endless Summer,” founder of Surfline.com, the go-to source for wave forecasts anywhere in the world, Sean Collins and Jim Moriarty, CEO of the Surfrider Foundation, just to name a few.
BLUEGREEN’S international festival run is testament to the power of its message and was a favorite among the ocean and surf festival circuit including: The Santa Cruz Film Festival, Mar Del Plata International Film Festival, The Blue Ocean Film Festival, The Ventura Film Festival, The Cornwall International Film Festival, International Film Festival St. Jean De Luz, First Coast Surf Film Festival, Surfestival III (Chile) and won ‘Best Travel Film’ in the Santa Barbara Ocean Film Festival.
There is an environmental message that Keller pays special attention to — in light of the rise in the man-made pollution (i.e. Deepwater Horizon oil spill) –and he believes there is a fundamental lack of understanding and knowledge of just how important a role the ocean plays in our daily lives and hopes a better understanding will lead to its protection.
Featuring some of the world’s most talented surfers, including Keith Malloy and 7-time Women’s World Champion, Layne Beachley, combine with footage shot around the world, BLUEGREEN examines the connection between humans and the ocean and explores this connection through thoughtful insight from scientists, activists, athletes and enthusiasts. From the physiological to the spiritual, filmmaker and surfer, Ben Keller explores the power of the ocean and how it affects our lives and why we are all attracted to it in one way or another.
